The Location of L'Abri
L'Abri is situated in the Karkloof Mountain range, 50 Km North of Pietermaritzburg where the indigenous forest, scenic
trails and waterfalls form the backdrop for people to discover themselves, and the potential of group productivity and
companionship. 80% of the property is covered with indigenous mist belt forest, and has 5
waterfalls cascading down the Mshwathi River Valley. The "240 hectare outdoor classroom" provides an opportunity for many exciting and adventurous
activities, such as a challenging foofie slide, a waterfall jump, a waterfall swing, a night hike, challenging forest trails and
an optional sleep out.
Registered as Natural Heritage Site #123, L'Abri falls under the conditions of the registration. When the property was
zoned "educational" in 1987, a comprehensive Needs and Desirability study was carried out. Part of the study was an
environmental impact assessment.
The L'Abri management continue to conserve the pristine natural environment and use it extensively in their work. Path
maintenance, invader control, and pollution (including waste disposal), are all aspects of L'Abri that receive high
priority as part of the mission of the organisation. The property is not freely available to the general public and strict
controls are placed on access.
The natural beauty of L'Abri is part of the "L'Abri experience" and its conservation is vital for the sustainability of the
programme and business of L'Abri.
